Introduction

Management within an organization involves creation of conducive internal environment within which all the stakeholders involved are able to combine their efforts towards the attainment of certain pre-determined goals (Richard 2012). Essentially, good management entails effectiveness and efficiency where the former indicates the task to be undertaken while the latter indicates whether the task is carried out correctly (Rospenda and Richman, 2005). However, for an efficient management system to be achieved, it is dependent on several factors exhibited by an individual in an organization namely; perceptions, abilities and passion. In any work environment, there exists various individuals who may hold dissenting opinions in regard to matters pertinent to the organization. Thisstudy will seek to outline a style of management that would be inclusive of all stakeholders in an organization and justify it concerning various models namely MARS (Motivation, Ability, Role Perceptions and Situational Factors) and CANOE (Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Openness to experience and Extraversion). The study will also make the assertion as to which style of management would suit an organization which comprises of a diverse personnel in order to ensure efficiency in achieving its goals and objectives. The study would also make suggestions on possible means of including all individuals into the organizational activities in spite of their diversity.

Styles of Management

Harmony and unity within a hotel setting is crucial in ensuring the delivery of quality services to all customers who visit the establishment. The manager or supervisor must make use of a style of management that clearly outlines the goals and objectives to be achieved individually and as an organization (Schmidt, 1973). The study makes the recommendation for the use of a Democratic style of management in ensuring the efficient management of the hotel. This style involves holding discussions with all staff members of the organization in order to consolidate all views and opinions held by them with regard to the running of the organization (J. 2000). This style ensures inclusivity of all members who are diverse and have inherent differences but through the harmony and cooperation created in the organization they agree to work together. It would be prudent of management to adopt this style as opposed to other styles such as Directive which entail the issuance of direct commands to staff without prior consultation. This leads to the deterioration of performance both for individually and for the organization as a whole and greatly reduces staff morale. The use of democratic style of management ensures that any issues raised by staff to the senior executives is acted upon and thus improves the morale and welfare of the employees who are motivated towards achievement of the organizational goals and objectives.

Justification based on the MARS model

The MARS model of individual behaviour is anchored on key aspects that define its inherent characteristics. These 4 aspects form the acronym MARS namely; Motivation, Ability, Role Perceptions and Situational Factors (Green, 2015). Motivation may be described as an internal force inherent in an individual that enables him or her to have passion in the achievement of set targets in an organization. It usually occurs among staff who are working in a good organizational environment and ensures optimal performance for the organization. Ability refers to the natural and acquired quality or power that enables an individual to perform a particular task. Role perception refers to the belief or ideal held by an individual with regard to the performance of a particular task in an organization. The perception held by an individual is crucial for the achievement of the company’s goals and objectives (Cardinal, 2013). Situational factors refer to the environmental setting within the organization that may be influenced by fellow team members, budgets and timeframe among others. The Democratic style of management is justified within this model in that staff members feel motivated as they are able to have their issues looked into and addressed by the senior executives. Through various discussions, staff are able to identify areas in which individuals are specialized and have abilities with a view to increase productivity in the organization. Staff hold a positive perception of the organization as a result of this style of management being in use as it is inclusive of everyone’s needs and opinions. It embraces the concept of diversity and creates a conducive working environment in the organization.

Justification based on CANOE model

The CANOE model is based on five personality traits that define the behaviour of individuals within society. These five factors are as follows; Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Openness and Extraversion. Conscientiousness may be described as the ability of an individual to discern what is right or wrong based on his or her own conscience. Agreeableness refers to the quality of an individual in an organization of being cooperative and helpful towards others within the workplace (Anderson, 1999). Neuroticism refers to the ability of an individual to exercise control over their own emotions and impulses especially within the workplace in a bid to create a conducive environment for working. Openness is a virtue that is portrayed by an individual through the interaction with other members in the organization. It ensures cohesiveness as staff are able to share experiences within the organization and express themselves adequately. Extraversion is described as the ability of an individual in the workplace to have strong interpersonal relations with other staff members through increased participation in organizational discourse (Wallace, 2004). The Democratic style of management is in tandem with this model in that staff in such an organization are able to fully express their opinions to the relevant senior executives thus create harmony and cooperation. Staff in an organization with a Democratic style of management are able to engage in various discussions among themselves thus are open to one another on the challenges faced and achievements realized within the organization. Through interaction with other staff members, an individual is able to gain relevant experience into improving his or her productivity within the organization that is greatly beneficial.

Conclusion

From the foregoing, it is clear that the style of management in use greatly influences the performance and continued existence of an organization.Justification of the Democratic style of management based on the MARS and CANOE models has indicated that it creates co-existence and harmony within the workplace thus an efficient style of management for application. The use also ensures an inclusive work environment for all regardless of any evident differences. Through the use of a Democratic style of management, the organization would fully achieve its set goals and objectives and ensure its continued existence overtime.
