The graduate registered nurses have to face many issues during the transition period from graduate RN to a practicing registered nurse. The recent studies in this field have shown that this transition period is very stressful for the many graduate Registered nurses. They face many challenges to fit in the new environment. These challenges are social and demographic changes, technological issues, legal and ethical issues, workplace violence and hostility (Rush et al, 2013); (Feng & Tsai 2012). The researches show that proper support, education, and complete support during the transition period could result in better patient centered care and improvement in staff. This assignment will endeavor to outline the issue of workplace hostility and management of patient-centered care. This will be in conjunction to the transition of graduates to registered nurses. Patient-centered care is a very essential topic that has been discussed in a broader sense by various studies. This assignment will focus towards this topic as it has been a very ill managed healthcare service.

Workplace Hostility and Patient –centered Care

The recent studies related to the patient-centered care have shown that there were deficits in the nursing standards, as the nurses reported that they could not give enough time to address the patient’s concern completely (West, Barron, & Reeves, 2005). The blame was also given on the lack of staff, resources and proper equipments. According to the study of Kvale & Bondevik, (2008), patient-centered care is the term, which is difficult to be defined completely, as it involves many challenges to be addressed properly. The dissatisfaction of the patient was also related to their personal values, beliefs and expectations (Okougha, 2013).

The contemporary issue in providing the patient-centered care is also the experience, support and education of the registered nurses. The hostile behavior in relation to nursing could be related to the behavior of other nurses, health professionals and physicians. The hostile behavior towards the graduate registered nurses could be in various forms, it could be related to physical violence, verbal abuse, threat of getting harm, sexual harassment; or any kind of subtle behavior such as refusing to corporate, not providing proper assistance, withholding main information about patients, making the work more difficult and hampering the performance of the new nurses. Various studies have also found that hostile behavior with the graduate RN’s could also threaten the safety of the patients, by negatively affecting the workplace environment. Hindering proper professional communication and professional relationships also affect the patient-centered care (Vessey, DeMarco, & DiFazio, 2010).

Hostile behavior within the team could also affect the team work, which is very essential for delivering quality patient-centered care (Rosenstein, & O’Daniel, 2005). In relation to healthcare service, the subtle forms of the hostile behavior, such as not providing the clinical information of the patient could result in potential risk towards patient care. Such behavior not only gives negative impact on the patient’s safety and health outcomes; but, the nurses facing hostile behavior also result is their depression, anxiety, leaving the job, and even post-traumatic disorder (Rosenstein, & O’Daniel, 2005) . “This issue is important as research has suggested graduate registered nurses demonstrate vulnerability which can easily lead to bulling or hostility in the workforce” (Hickson, 2013).

The healthy environment for the patient-centered care is very important to obtain healthy outcomes for the patients. The subtle hostile behaviors could be started with sarcastic comments, which in turn discourages the young nurses and hinder their performance at work. They do not feel secure and comfort at their workplace, which in turn make them detached from their profession. The hostility and violence in the healthcare setting is a well researched topic, and many healthcare facilities have witnessed its impact. The environment that ignores such bullying events would be responsible for the destruction of the professionals and important communication. The hostile behavior of the clinicians with new graduate registered nurses result in making them weak, and their work becomes troublesome for them (Baumberger-Henry, 2012).

Importance of Preventing Workforce Hostility

Different evidences have shown that hostility in workforce is very evident. The graduate registered nurses are under the burden of this problem. It is very important for the nurses to have appropriate knowledge and understanding about such issue, so that they can deal with them in a better way. This is also important for them to create job satisfaction. The study of Vessey et al, (2009) suggest that workforce hostility could be reduced by the involvement of the complete nursing and healthcare staff, informing the graduates about good and bad practices at work, and making them more aware about the workplace problems and challenges. Hostility or violence in the workforce can make many new graduates to be apprehensive about their job.

Workforce hostility is also not safe for the patient-centered care setting. The patients may have to face the negative effects of this issue. Simple strategies could be applied to workforce issues. More positive communication among the staff could be the best way to avoid such issues.

Building good relationships with patients and their families is also very important in patient-centered care. The hostility in workforce does not provide proper assistance to the graduate nurses. Less support and less communication with the staff, create new issues for the graduate RN’s, as they are not able to delivery timely services to the patients, and their heaths are at risk.
