A yarning is reffered to as an informal conversation most popular amongst the aboriginal population. When a group of people sit in a circle to talk informally in order to get to know each other, to listen stories and fables or to exchange information, it is called a yarning circle. Yarning circles are performed to ease tension among members of a group, so that they can get to know each other and to exchange their knowledge and experience. Yarning circles is a chance for people to get first hand information about the topics they are interested in (yarning with a purpose) from the people who have actually experienced that particular thing. Yarning circles can prove to be useful when one has to research about a topic and needs to get genuine information about it. They encourage human to human interaction which proves to be supportive to explore about a topic in depth which may not be possible when conversing formally. They prove to be beneficial for educational, research and leisure purposes. Yarning circles usually involve a lot of story telling, which is an advantage because stories make everyone listen and are used to teach children. Goal: The aim of the conducted yarning circle is to make the young people understand the importance of verbal conversations with friends and family;to make them realise how important it is to express their own views, thoughts, opinions and perspectives and to have good communication skills.

EYLF Outcome: LO5: Children are effective communicators

Performance indicator: All the children will begin to talk about what they aspire to do and become, their hobbies, their life so far and what they expect from it. They shall talk about their parents, atmosphere at home, their relatives, friends at school etc.

Rationale: This experience must make them realise the goal of the conducted yarning experience. They will realise the importance of spending time with friends and family. They shall realise how important it is to be vocal about your opinions.

Time: 7 p.m. Location: 0 indoors 1 outdoors

Resources: 1. Putting up of a poster which sayins ‘Yarning Circle to know understand everything around you and yourself as well’.

  1. A garden/playground to have access of fresh air wile conversing for better conversation outcomes.
  2. Selection of a good topic to begin he coversation (Ice-breaing session/building of a social yarn), for example hobbies, passions of children, views on different news these days, etc.

Transition strategy: Developing a social yarn, talking about school, favorite subjects, hobbies, and towards the end of this social yarn (ice-breaking session) we get to the yarn with a purpose, after building trust and increasing accountability, and then sleathily moving into the topic yarn/purpose yarn.

Procedure: We will take off with a social yarn, or an ice breaking session where in we first build up trust amongst ourselves. We take up a common topic of interest and begin discussion, most commen examples for this are hobbies, aspirations, goals, aims, school, interests etc. Follwing this we slowly go towards the yarn with a purpose. This has to be done seamlessly. I begin talking about my profession, education and family which will encourage them to do the same. When they talk about their family and school friends we can slowly get to the disscussion as to how important it is to spend time with them. This way we encourage everybody in the circle to talk, thereby encouraging them to put forward their views. Just for the children to speak up, I can say a contradicting or a controversial thing, but this has to be done when we are way deep in the conversation.

Teaching Strategies/Adult’s role: Following the social yarn, if I want the children to talk about something in particular, I will first talk about it, to give them the idea or support to do the same. The adulut job is to bring out their personalities and opinions, which can be done only when the adult himself is open and who speaks his mind. This will make the conversation intriguing,interesting and exciting.

Evaluation of Experience: The session made children talk about their aims in life, their hobbies, their faimly and friends. They voiced their opinions as to how they feel that they need to spend more time with the people they are close to than and the internet. It went well for we were able to bring out most of the children and were able to gather a lot of different kinds of perspectives. The children responded to various different kinds of questions and though they were shy and felt awkward intitially, they opened up eventually. The children realised the goal of this session and at the end of it most of them agreed as to why and how it is important to be vocal, optimistic, smart and affectionate . The timing of the session, the seamless transitions, the topics, the aim of the session etc. all were to the benefit of the yarning circle.

Future Planning: It was quite clear through this experience that yarning circles are an extremely useful way to make people, especially children, learn. By researching about yarning circles and conducting one we got to know how to carry out one and can do better the next time. A yarning circle for introvert adolescents to encourage them to speak up more, and for teenangers who spend a lot of time surfing on the internet and not with their family, to cousel unhappy and depressed youngsters, a support group cum yarning circle etc. by using the strategies similar to the ones we used, with seamless transitions and easy conversation with each other.

A Bonfire Night is something that is quite similar to the yarning circle tradition. It is actually the name given to Guy Fawkes Night, which is celebrated on 5 November in Great Britain. But today, bonfires can be lit and bonfire nights can be celebrated at any times when one is with family. In modern day bonfire nights, one might sit with family members during outstation trips, or with friends when out for camping. They cook marshmellows, sing songs, tell childhood stories, tales, laugh, eat and enjoy. When a group of people consisting of either family members, friends or camping companions or all of them light up a Bonfire at night,sit around it and talk informally, it is called a bonfire night. A Bonfire Night quite similar to the yarning circle tradition as it involves talking, conversing, understanding one another, and being away from your usual monotonous routine and daily life. Bonfire nights are an escape from your stressful life and gives you a break for relaxation. It is a chance to get to know new people and spending time with your known ones. Bonfire nights stand importance in today’s world because these days everyone is busy day to night, with no time for their family, social life or even themselves. Today’s world has become too materialistic and money-minded that they forget where true happiness lies. Thus Bonfire nights are performed to give time to your loved ones as well as yourself. A time of joy, understanding, counselling and affection, it is the most appropriate and desired method, culturally friendly and safe to convey information, research about various things, for example ancestors, to share views, perspectives and interests with family members. This is why bonfire nights are performed and this is why they stand important.
