Introduction

My community placement assignment at a general practice in Ballarat was clouded by a lot of great revelations; some were positive, and others negative. Personally, I would choose to talk about the real insights that I gained while on the community placement project, but I cannot do that because of the importance of the negative observation during the period. The project was overall as a success story because regardless of the negative views; I still felt that the learning objectives in this course were met. In the end, I am conscious of the fact that nursing profession is not always about the positive, as it also involves dealing with some nasty negative scenarios, which require professional approaches to solving. I visited three people receiving nursing services from their home; one was a senior woman of about 60 years suffering from diabetes, the second of a 40-year-old man suffering from a dislocated spin, and the last one was a 15-year-old boy with a fractured double leg.

The fact that I met three patients of different ages and conditions was very important and helpful in the entire process because it gave me an opportunity to discern and relate the importance of community health care and nursing programs, and also taunted me into reflective about the best ways in which nursing professionals would work to improve their services to the people who are being attended to from their home.

My first meeting with the 60-year old diabetic woman was very encouraging, as the old granny talked about how the services she is receiving from home had helped her recovery process. She said that at home, she does not need the help of nurses always as her grandchildren and children are always around to help her with exercises, and diet. She was also happy because the burden of traveling to and from the hospitals had been removed from her, which she acknowledges as being economical. The granny’s positive attitude towards community nursing was very encouraging and reminded me of the need by people in the nursing profession to provide affordable health care services to the society. She was also positive about nurses visiting her time after time to monitor her progress and bringing her some drug supplies. What I think is professional and ethical that nurses continue offering community health service with close monitoring of patients’ progress from their homes.

However, when it came to the 15-year-old boy with a fractured double leg, I realized that the nursing professionals taking care of his wounds were lacking a sense of professionalism and work ethics. The boy complained of neglect by the nurses citing many instances when he had gone without his injuries being dressed and cleaned by the nurses concerned. Listening to the plight of this boy, I thought that leaders in nursing organizations needed to follow up the activities of their juniors on the ground because some were being lazy and negligence of their roles. However, I enjoyed the project and the place I visited. This assignment was overwhelmingly helpful for my nursing course and career.
