Select three (3) leaders to examine (two from the textbook and the third may be from the textbook or another leader of your choosing). As a group, research and analyse the leadership styles of your selected leaders with reference to the leadership concepts covered in the unit (ethics, evolution of leadership, psychology of leadership, multi-cultural leadership, leadership theories). Compare and contrast the selected leaders and present an argument for which of the leaders presents the most effective leadership style for the contemporary globalised economy.

Include individual feedback (250 words per team member) in an appendix to the essay in which each team member comments on the group-work process.

A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way – (John C. Maxwell). There are two beliefs about leaders and leadership. one believes leaders are born, others believe they are made. We believe leaders are made, not born. If you have the desire, courage and determination you can become a great leader. Good leaders develop through never ending process of self-study, education, training and experience. (Jago,1982) Great leaders are the people who influence others to achieve a desired outcome/goal. Those leadership style can influence form attitudes, beliefs/values, ethics, teamwork, and character. But all these builds up from their experience and learning, that’s the reason we say that leaders are made not born.

According to the classic style of leadership there are three main categories which are Authoritarian, participative and Delegative. (Lewin, Lippit, white, 1939) Authoritarian leaders make decisions alone as power is centralised, decisions are enforced using rewards and punishments. Democratic / Participative leaders make decisions with an agreement of one or more employees in the team. Communication flows freely in both ways. This type of leadership will encourage members to commit to the final achievement. The delegative style of leaders give power to his subordinates to make decisions still, the leader is responsible of the decisions taken by employees. Good leaders can use all three style of leadership models based on what forces are involved and depending on the situation.

When it comes to leadership, Teamwork is the most important thing. good leaders should be able to work with different teams toward achievement. There are different types of teams Traditional, Project, Cross functional, multicultural, High performance, High performance inclusive, and Pseudo. (Lecture 02 slides) Bruce Tuckman introduces 4 stages of team in 1965. forming, storming, norming, performing and later in 1970 he added a fifth stage as Adjourning. Despite the other factors in the Ethical leadership is one of the main expectation of a leader of the globalised world now days. Qualities such as Character, integrity, collective motivation and encouragement etc. (John Schaubroeck & Bernie Malonson, 2013).

Early leadership theories focused on qualities are inherent in leaders and followers in later theories focused more on factors such as situational and skill level. Mainly there can be 8 leadership theories found at all times. Great man theory which assume that leaders are born not made and the leadership is inherent. Trait theory similar to great man theory it assumes that certain qualities are inherent trait makes them better suitable for leadership. Contingency theory and Situational theory is similar from the look which believe same leadership style is not suitable at all time and it may vary depending on the situation and the environment of the issue. Behavioural theory talks more about that leaders are made not born and focus more on actions of leaders than the mental qualities. Participative theory is the leadership that takes input of others in decision making. That encourage group member’s contribution and commitment in decision making process. Management / Transactional theory focuses on the role of supervision, organization and performance. This leadership system is based on rewarding and punishments. Relationship / Transformational theory focusses the relationship between both leader and the followers. This style of leadership inspires and motivate group members to perform and want to make sure all the group members achieve their targets. (article ref 7)

When leading and managing people in and organization multicultural leadership is one of the most needed quality that a great leader should have within him. Morrison points out that leadership models should draw form many academic disciplines to be able to understand and appreciate the business environment from the globe. By using multi- disciplinary the leaders are able to work and motivate people with different cultures. (Morrison,2000)

Three great leaders who was success in their journey.

Firstly, we will talk about “Margaret Thatcher”. She was a British stateswoman and a politician who was the prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 – 1190. She was a strong leader for the country where she was also known as “The Iron Lady” for her Uncompromising politics and leadership style. Secondly we will describe the characteristics of Martin Luther King Jr who was an American Baptist minister and an activist who had lead Africa-American Civil right moments. He was best known for his leadership style of nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. Finally, we describe the qualities and leadership styles of Bill Clinton who was the 42nd President of United States from 1993 – 2001 who made US more peaceful and high economic development in his era.
