A decade from now I see myself as being the managing director of a publishing firm in Manhattan. I realize that leadership skills are acquired over time through constant learning and experience which is what I am currently garnering. I am an avid reader and one of the things I know the world cannot get enough of is good books, bearing creative literature. I see myself moving from conventional sources such as American and British literature into foreign cultures that have so much to share with the world but are barred by several factors including lacking publishers who can give them the right exposure. A lot of good literature has yet to be shared with the world, and as a leader, I see myself encouraging many unconventional writers to share their stories with the world.

To achieve this I need to polish my knowledge of foreign literature and identify how to reach a market that potentially is looking for something different. As an avid reader, I know that as one reads loads of literature about familiar culture, while they never really tire of it, they get curious about what more is out there. I took an interest in African literature a few years back and I have been intrigued by the wealth of knowledge contained in these books. I need to keep searching for literature that exists but has no avenue of reaching the masses. Often, literature from such foreign cultures as France and Asia, may be barred by the aspect of language. English is the most widely spoken language and as such non-English writers often do not have as wide a market as English writers. Yet they often have unique and different ways of presenting literature that is worth exploring and are so rich in culture which gives them a fresh perspective.

Along the way I see myself being in assistant editing, editing, and research jobs. These will help refine my ability to judge good literature when I see it and especially enable me determine what the masses would embrace because sometimes I find that I enjoy literature that does not have the same effect on others. This should also refine my editing skills so that I am able to help writers tell their stories in the best way possible. My experience with certain literature is that the writer may have quite a story, yet this could be barred by the way they tell the story. I realize that having a god story is just as important as knowing how to excellently tell it. So style, presentation, sentence construction, clauses and other aspects of literature presentation are a skill I need to acquire if I am to successfully run a publishing firm.

When I achieve my greatest job, the legacy I leave to the world with be a wealth of rich literature that so diverse that it has the ability to make its readers a lot more open minded especially in regards to culture. It is said that travelling is one of the most effective ways of opening up the mind and learning. I believe literature allows the reader to travel in their mind, visiting cultures, places and events they had no concept or knowledge of. Globalization has especially made it important for people to be culturally knowledgeable and culturally intelligent. My legacy will be integrating cultures from all over the world through literature and allowing people to learn about the world just as well as if they travelled all the time to foreign lands and interacted with diverse cultures. I also hope to leave behind an improved reading culture.
