Introduction

The Quality of work life [QWL] and Industrial Relations areplaying major roles in the HRM [Human Resource Management]. QWL defines the condition of work environment for anyone who is working in any organization. Industrial Relations define the relationship between the employees and the management of the organization. Bothconcepts are related to the employees and stakeholders of the organization and without them, they cannot achieve the objective or aim of their business. Every organization should have to understand the need and importance of the QWL and industrial relations. The paper brief discusses some conditions of the QWL and major characteristics of the Industrial Relations in the HRM.

  1. Quality of work life in HRM

QWL defines the favorableness of the work environment provided by the organization to their employees and workers. One of the famous definitions of the QWL defined by the J. Richard and J. Loy is, “the degree to which members of a work organization are able to satisfy important personnel needs through their experience in the organization”(Fattahi, Kazemian , Damirchi, Kani, & Hafezian, 2014). There are eight standard conditions are of the Quality of work life but here only three needs to explain. They are as follow:

  • Safety and healthy environment

Everyone who is working in any industry wants a safety and healthy environment for working. A safe and healthy environment is a type of work life condition that highlights the physical and psychological aspects of anyone in their respective working environment. It directly or indirectly affects the mental and physical health of the employee or worker if he or she does not feel satisfaction from their current working environment ( Kiriago & Bwisa, 2013).

Every organization belongs to any field always try to provide a safe and healthy environment with suitable conditions. Due to the humanitarian and legal requirement, every organization compulsory provides such environment. Employees and workers work without any worry or tension in such type of environment. For building the safety and healthy environment, the organization uses different techniques such as insurance of worker, various safety tools in their respective working building or factory, and so on. Along this, due to the high completion in the current business market, most of the employee has a tension to work more in high pressure. However, by getting such environment, employees do not feel any fear regarding their security during working.

  • Growth and security

Growth and security are another condition for maintaining the quality of work life in this competitive business market. It is very necessary for everyone including employee or worker to continue to grow in their respective work field to gain success in the life and when he or she get good opportunities in his or her work field then it improves the QWL. Every employee has desire for the career progression with job security. If they have some fears regarding their job security then it affects the organization working (Fattahi, Kazemian , Damirchi, Kani, & Hafezian, 2014). In this case, the QWL provides opportunities to continue growth and security to the employees of the organization by promotions, enhancing capabilities, motivates for acquiring knowledge, and so on.

  • Social relevance/responsibility

Today most of the organizations are trying to become more social and defining social responsibilities in their CSR activities. The social relevance or responsibility condition of the QWL defines the establishment of the social relevance to the work force that provides benefits to the society. It includes different types of actions such as behave ethically in the work place, treats everyone equally and fairly manner, supports the work of nonprofit organizations, minimizes the damage to the environment, and so on( Jakubczak & Gotowska, 2015). In simple words, every activity that affects the society is comes under the social responsibilities of the QWL.

If any organization provides low-quality products or services, unable to satisfy the demands of the customers, no control on the environment pollutions or some unethical employment practices, then it indicates that they provide the low quality of work life. In such condition, no one wants to join such organization. Therefore, every organization should have to provide a high QWL according to the need of society and their people.

The characteristics of the industrial relations in HRM

The main objective of the industrial relations is to promote the labour management and improves the strength of the workers that are working in the industry. Here are some characteristics of the industrial relations as follow ( Silva, 2011):

  • The major characteristic of the industrial relation is that it determines the terms and conditions of employments for the workers which is most important for the worker or employees. The organization design and develop their working terms and condition according to their business to avoid any future problems.
  • The industrial relations establish a proper communication between the employees and the management. It forces everyone who is associated with the industry to work together in a co-operative manner.
  • The industrial relations also play a major role in the settlement of any dispute or difference between the employees and the management and try to make a negotiation resolve such dispute.
  • The industrial relations provide the social protection, safety, child labour by its terms, rules, and regulations. In any accident occurred either in the factory of any organization and any worker injured due to this accident then the worker has right to get compensation from the organization.
  • The industrial relations help the human resource management to develop the required skill and knowledge to their employees or worker for gaining more profits from their products and services.

Conclusion

HRM is the base of any organization that has the responsibilities to handle their employees, workers, or stakeholders. For the efficient management of all these, QWL and Industrial relations are helping to the HRM. Due to the increasing demands of the customers, or stakeholders, every organization has pressure to provide high satisfactions to them. For this, they need hardworking employees and worker. Using QWL and effective industrial relations, the organization can get this. Hence, the paper concludes that both concepts are very critical in any organization at this time.
