Design and develop electronics - computer systems projects

Project

To successfully gain competency in the unit UEENEEH188A , Design and develop electronics - computer systems projects, you are required to design a product using electronics.

Following is the schedule you should follow to plan the project

Task 1: Describe the product

Describe the product in you are planning to design using a brief report with minimum of 300 words. In this task you have to give details about the expected functionality, features, where it can be used, how it will be powered plus any other special features you are planning to include in the product.

Give an estimate the expected amount of money you are planning to spend to produce the product. This can be an estimate in this section, as you will be doing a more accurate calculation later.

In addition to the written report, add a neatly drawn diagram illustrating the product with two or more sides of the finished product. ( note: you can use drawing functions of MSWORD to draw this picture)

Mark the drawing with dimensions of the product and clearly show positioning of any controls, power connectors, network connectors etc. in the diagram

You can draw a 3-D view and front and side elevations to show these details

Task 2: Safety report

Discuss the safety features you would incorporate in to the design for the safety of users and to comply with industry requirements in Australia.

Submit Task 1 and 2 on or before 24th of May, by emailing your report to the teacher

TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute Created: 18/05/2016 Version: 1.0

Task 3: Design Circuit Diagram, and Develop a Bill of Material and order parts

Once your receive approval to proceed from the teacher, draw the circuit diagram using a CAD package. You can use a freely available Schematic Capture software or any other package you are familiar with.

Save your circuit diagram as a pdf file and send it to the teacher on or before 1st of June 2016.

Task 4: Design and build the prototype

You can start building the prototype of the product before finishing task 3,

Under this task you have to build the prototype and test it for functionality. Since you will be doing this project of your own you have to provide evidence of the product development by taking photos or videos and sending them to the teacher for feedback.

Once the prototype is functioning as expected bring it over to TAFE and demonstrate it to the teacher. You need to make prior arrangement with the teacher to demonstrate your prototype.

Task 5: Build the circuit and test it

Once the prototype is demonstrated, complete the product design by adding the enclosure and other controls, making it a completed product suitable for general use

Task 6: Complete documentation and submit

Compile all your documents, circuit diagram, costing and functional reports and submit for as the final assessment

Solution:Electronics – Computer System ProjectControl of Electronic Appliances using Mobile Phone

Product Description

Naming of the product

The product going to be designed is an ON, OFF control using mobile phone.

Functionality of the product

This project works on DTMF technology. DTMF stands for Dual Tone Multi Frequency. The main application of this project is to control switches using DTMF technology.

Features

The main features is that the project can be used to control ON OFF process of the electronic equipment which we use either in house or industry. This can be done using our mobile phone. Our mobile phone has the DTMF encoder. The decoder used is HT9107B which is an IC.

Where it can be used

This project can be implied for both industry and house appliances.

Special Features

  1. Appliances can be controlled from anywhere
  2. Electricity wastage can be reduced
  3. Over heating can be controlled

Estimated Cost

Sl. No Components Required Price in $
1 ATmega8 Microcontroller 02.00
2 HT9107B IC 01.00
3 Relay 0.55
4 Resistors 01.00
5 Capacitors 01.00
6 Crystal Oscillator 10.00
7 Wires 03.00
8 Power cords 02.00

Approximate total expense will be nearly $25.00

Diagram of the Product

The simple block diagram of the product is given below

simple block diagram

Basic Block Diagram

The block operates as follows. The input of the decoder comes from a controller. The controller is on through constantly checking for input. The decoder is used for decoding the input signal and sends to the Microcontroller in ones on zeros. The Microcontroller gives an output according the decoder input given to it. Relay helps in switching ON and OFF appliances.

Safety Report

  1. While designing the product care will be taken to properly insulate the product
  2. Care will be taken to prevent temperature rise
  3. The material used will be eco-friendly

Circuit Diagram

Circuit Diagram

The circuit produced for the product consist of

  1. ATMEGA8 Microcontroller
  2. HT9107B IC
  3. Relay
  4. AC load
  5. Resistors
  6. Capacitors
  7. Crystal Oscillator

The operation amplifier present in the decoded IC’S output is given to the pre-filter to separate low and high frequency. Then a four bit binary code is produced. Tone produced by the mobile is sent to op-amp. These codes are sent through resistor and Capacitors. The noninverting pin of the IC is connected to reference voltage. The output of the op-amp is given to pin number two of the IC through 100k resistor. The pin seven and eight are connected to crystal Oscillator. The Oscillator detects the tone from the mobile.

The output 12 to 14 are connected to the controller output. Relay is connected to the controller pin PD0 and PD1. The relay output is connected to the load.
