Introduction

Tourism is a rapidly growing industry and it accounts for the fourth largest industry in the world in terms of the export. The industry is also benefitted from events as the events act as catalysts to attract the visitors. Events make the image and also create destination profiles and thereby providing competitive advantages. This significance has prompted this new concept of event tourism. This generally refers to the systematic planning, marketing and development like economic growth and infrastructural development as animators of destination areas. The event tourism comprises of a market segment in which travellers of distinct qualities come. These are the travellers who travel to different countries with an objective to attend an event. Event tourism is a term that has been coined in the year 1980’s and gained much popularity in modern(Getz D. , 2008).This has also been a matter of research since that time. The impact of events on tourism is increasing gradually and this calls for latest research in the area. As mentioned earlier as well, that there are a number of studies taken place on this topic but then there is a need to find out the factors that affect the impact of events on tourism.

(Hackbert, 2009)suggested that the impact of events on tourism is both negative as well as positive and due to that it is very important to understand the factors that affect the impact of events on tourism. This is the major problem area and thus the major aim of this research proposal is to determine the factors that affecting the impact of events on tourism. It is also established by a research that events such as Olympics, sports summit, music concerts, award ceremonies, etc. attract a lot of tourists and due to that tourism industry in those countries earn huge revenue(Gibson, 2006). Amidst that if a research is conducted to know the factors that affect the impact of events on tourism then it will help the countries to work on that significantly and thereby addressing the issues in events as per that. Thus the research is very significant in knowing the factors that boosts up event tourism or the factors that result into hampering the event tourism. This will help in formulating event policies and thereby promoting event tourism.

The objectives of the research are as follows:

  • To ascertain the factors that hampers the impact of event tourism.
  • To determine the factors that enhances the impact of event tourism.
  • To lay down the overall results in such a manner that it shall help in the development of event policies for tourism so increase the scope of event tourism.

Literature Review Summary

Events are the planned political, cultural and sport meetings that take place for world fairs, community meets, Olympics, intergovernmental assemblies, competitions or conventions(Kovari & Zimanyi, 2012). It is an established fact that these types of events have potential to establish the tourism opportunities and such events positively motivate the travellers to travel to different countries to attend all these(Sonmez, Apostolopoulos, & Tarlow, 2008). But it is also known that scope of event tourism is still limited and there are various factors that result in affecting the impact of events on tourism. This is established by a researcher that it is not necessary that all the events are being attended by travellers and this is because of the fact that there are number of aspects behind this. There are many countries in the world that are using events as a mode of attracting wide range of tourists and thereby earning huge revenue from that(Getz & Page, 2016). Off lately many countries have started facing problems in this direction and it is noticed that event tourism is not gaining the popularity as expected. It is argued by a research that the when a region hosts an event it tends to gain popularity at global level and is also affected positively as well as negatively in many aspects(Kim, Boo, & Kim, 2013). It is also followed by a research that suggests that all the events also directly affect the participants and due to that there is a need to minimise the negative impacts from the communities to get the benefits from event tourism(Mair & Whiteford, 2013).Events are very important for the destinations since they catch the attention of travellers and this also increases the chances of travel in near future. There are economic impacts, environment impacts and community impacts of event tourism and this is why it is important to keep in consideration all these aspects while drawing inferences about the factors affecting the impact of event tourism (Jeffrey, 2012). Event tourism is thus a complex topic since many years and it is important to unfold it with researches.

Conceptual framework

The conceptual framework for the event tourism is adopted from an already established research. The different concepts of the present research are push factors for a tourist and pull factors for a tourist. These push and pull factors are also true for event tourism and thus this conceptual framework is very vital for the present research to understand various factors that affect the impact of event tourism.

Conceptual framework for event tourism

Methodology

Methodology is described as the tool that helps in undertaking a proper research to achieve the objectives of the research(Mantos, 2012). The researcher will use quantitative methodology to undertake this research. Under this type of methodology the researcher is able to measure the results using proper tools and techniques. The reason behind taking this methodology is that the researcher wants to determine the factors behind the impact of event tourism and to determine the factors there is need to measure those factors. This can only be done with the help of quantitative methodology. This methodology enables numerical analysis of the data that is collected using questionnaires. In this research the researcher will devise questionnaires to know the factors and this is why quantitative methodology is used.

Data Collection

The data will be collected using primary as well as secondary sources. Primary data will be used for this research and the primary data will be collected using closed ended questionnaires(Kumar, 2009). These questionnaires will be distributed to the target audience to know their opinion and hence the data will be collected. The questionnaire will be distributed using post, email and telephones.

The research will also have secondary data and the secondary data will be collected using previous researches, articles, Newspapers, e-library, journals, books, etc. This is how primary as well as secondary data will be collected for the research.

Sampling

Sampling helps in identifying the target audience for the purpose of the research. For this research the researcher will use convenience sampling(Kothari, 2015). This implies that on the basis of the convenience of the researcher the respondents for data collection will be chosen.

The sample universe comprises of travel agencies. The travel agents will be provided with the questionnaires to get their opinion about the topic of research. The sample size for this research will be around 100 travel agents. The information about travel agencies will be accessed online and with the help of their contact number they will be contacted to get the questionnaire filled.

Ethics

Ethics is an integral part of any research and it is very important to conduct the research ethically(Birch, 2013). Even after careful consideration some ethical issues arise in the research and this research is no exception. The most significant ethical issues in this research are confidentiality of data and biasness. The researcher will try the best to keep all the collected data confidential but in circumstances such as online collection there are chances that confidentiality may get affected. The researcher is using convenience sampling and due to that there are chances that biased views may come and affect the dignity and integrity of the research. Since everyone is not provided with the opportunity of equal response and due to that chances of biasness are there.

Conclusion

In this manner the present research by using quantitative analysis will get to know the factors that affect event tourism by knowing the perceptions of travel agents who are directly related to the event travellers. This will further help in addressing the problem related to negative aspects of the event travelling which is persisting gradually in many regions. Thus the research will be beneficial to the government of different regions to understand the factors behind impacts of event tourism and thus on the basis of those factors formulating the new policies. This will further help in attracting more event travellers .It will also help the travel agencies to provide optimum facilities to the event travellers after getting to know the factors that affect them.
