Abstract

Shipping Australia Limited Company (SAL) is one of the largest shipping industries in Australia. The business does no only handle the shipping needs of businesses but also manages some of ships that are privately owned by investors. It is an all-round business that strives to ensure that all the transportation needs of the Australians people are met. The company though it started off as a small business over the past twenty years has managed to grow into one of the prestigious industries in Australia. It has taken advantage of the Australian ports and ensures that it has connected to some of the countries that highly port or imports goods to and from Australia.

Purpose

The purpose of the marine industry is to promote and advance the interest of ship-owners and shipping agents in the matter of transportation policy and ensure that there is the sustainable ship operations are environmentally safe (Plowman, O Australia & Sitmar Line. 2004).

Basis of operations

The company covers major Australians based as well as the Australian international ship owners, operations and agency companies that are involved in bulk, tanker cargo shipping, container shipping, passenger and tramp trades.

Modus operandi

SAL unions are using an act that includes a full array of matters and agreements that could be assumed as issues that are related to the promotion of privilege and labour rights as contrasting to the condition, wages of the employees or boosting of productivity at enterprise levels. The professional industry standard relevant to SAL is the food industry. Just like the containers that are carrying the equipment have to be well maintained, painted, checked for risk and ensure that they are fit for a commodity (In Head & In Crowley, 2015)., the food industry has to make sure that it has a clean environment suited cook meals that are fit for human consumption.

The objective of the report is to give background information about one of the most prominent companies in Australia was known as SAL. The company is well entrenched, and it is known to offer shipping needs to some of the largest companies.

SAL background

SAL Company was founded in 1990 by two brothers named Hans and Claus Heinrich .they started with three vessels that they took from their father, Paul Heinrich (Whiteside, Wilson, Blackburn, Ho?rnig & Wilson, 1991). The brothers established the business as a way of helping define the heavy lifting in the shipping industry and have managed to develop it in its current form. The company started out as Schiffahrtskontor Altes Land GmbH and was more focused on chartering business. The business boomed and the company soon developed into an oversized and cumbersome cargo sea transport (.Marten, 2014). The company was dedicated to seamanship, engineering and business acumen. The company builds a world leading position as a massive carrier. The company started off with a 30 tonnes crane and today the shipping industry can be able to handle over 1,000 tonnes.

Scope and limitation

The scoop that that business has is that it has been operational for over 15 years and has the experience required in handling any shipping needs that a company or an organisation might need. On the same note, the company has invested in the materials that are necessary to ensure that the shipping requirements of any given organisation run smoothly. The company has established businesses in Asia and specific, some of the countries that the firm has established the business is South Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Japan and the company is still planning on expanding (Meredith & Dyster, 2012).

The limitation that SAL shipping company is facing is that the competitions policy review panel known as the final review board has effectively overlooked the submission of the Shipping Australian Company and Australian Peak Shippers Association. Thus, this has led to the linear operation to be justifiable on the concern about what this will mean to them concerning both protection and additional cost (Shapiro & Varian, 2009). The final report recommendation of the shipping companies is that a block of exemption can only be allowed by the Australian competition and consumer commission (ACCC), and should be available for linear transportation agreements that meet the minimum standard of any pro-competitive features (Nagarajan, 2013). On the same note, it is the ACCC that determines any pro-competitive features to be able to qualify for the block exemption and should be in consultation with shippers' ad their representative bodies and the liner shipping industry.

Discussion

The shipping company SAL requested to be exempted from the ACCC competitive feature as it is one of the largest company and should be able to stand on its own, rather than being put together with other small businesses. However, the Australian Peak Shippers Association ignored the request and had decided that the ACCC should be followed by all the businesses that are doing the shipping. Though it might appear like SAL is not being given the recognition that it deserves, the policy is there to protect everyone that is working in the shipping industry (Chircop, 2012). Thus, it means that the industry is protected and SAL though they might not have gotten the exemption that they were seeking are better placed at presents and also future where they might face other competitors.

Recommendation

Since SAL is one of the biggest shipping companies in Australia, it should not strive to do its business as though it was a monopolistic business. The policies that have been put in place to ensure that everything runs smoothly in the shipping business are there to protect both the bug and small businesses. Thus, SAL should follow these policies and be assured that in the case of something happens to the firm, and they did to downsize, that the interest of the shipping company will be protected regardless of the size.

Conclusion

SAL is one of the shipping companies that are doing well in Australia, and although the business started off as a small enterprise, it has managed to grow into one massive business investment. However, the shipping company feels that it should be exempted in some of the policies that are being made of the transportation industry. The proposal has not been approved, and the company shall continue to operate like other businesses as it charts it business course going forward.
