Type II diabetes is a condition that, if poorly managed, can significantly reduce the quality of life of a patient. Therefore, this program can be used to empower the patient and help her to deal better with her condition (Garber et al, 2013).The patient is suffering from an arterial ulcer probably caused by the diabetic disorder which gives her difficulty in movement. Her weight has been noted to have significantly increased in a relatively short time, which can lead to other complications. She also complains of lack of energywhich is a typical symptom of diabetes mellitus type II.This combination of health conditions makes the client’s life difficult at her age. This learning program is developed to assist the client to manage her diabetic condition and improve the quality of her life.
Type II diabetes is a metabolic disorder that causes the body to be unable to properly use insulin. Despite the pancreas producing insulin normally, the disorder creates the impression of a relative insufficiency. When characterized by insulin resistance, the condition causes cells to respond poorly to the presence of insulin and may cause the level of sugar in the blood to rise. Symptoms accompanying the condition vary between patients. However, increased thirst, frequent hunger, fatigue and sores that take unusually longer times to heal are common symptoms. A high level of sugar concentration in the blood pulls fluid from tissues causing the thirst.Frequent hungerscan contribute to weight gain as in the case of the patient if the patient consumes carbohydrates with a high glycemic index (Orozco-Beltran et al., 2016). Such foods cause sudden changes in the level of glucose in the blood and may trigger the patient to use high doses of insulin to counter. In turn, high levels of insulin in the blood cause the body to store calories from consuming food instead of using them for energy. Therefore, it can be deduced that the client’s disability is the cause of the symptoms such as the arterial ulcer, lack of energy and weight gain she has been experiencing.
The quality of life of the client has been significantly lowered as a result of the diabetes. She has to visit the local doctor thrice daily to get the ulcer dressed; an activity she cannot comfortably fulfil due to the pain from the ulcer. Her mobility has also reduced because of the same. The patient has lost energy which is a common symptom of her disorder. She has significantly gainedweight in a short period, which is a worrying condition as increases her risk of medical complications. Therefore, the client needs to learn how to manage her condition so that she can avoid most of the difficulties she is currently experiencing. A learning program is a strategy that can empower her by giving her the appropriate information about managing her situation (Capozza et al., 2015).It will identify the resources she can access, including professionals who can assist in the process.
In developing the learning program, evaluating the particular learning needs of the patient is very important (Guo et al., 2013). Their ability and willingness to learn also significantly influence the program. Another consideration is the amount of knowledge they already have on their condition and if they know how to manage it well.
The two important skills that the patient will need to learn are managing her diet and exercise. The need to learn these skills is informed by her current situation and the objectives she should aim at.
The teaching approach will use a combination of written material and verbal explanations. The material to be used will be:
These two prescriptions will be followed by verbal explanations on the importance of each element described in the plan.
Type II diabetes is a health condition that can significantly reduce the quality of a patient if poorly managed.
