Great Sydney Bike Club (GSBC) is a typical Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) that is employing around 50 people and has a turnover of approximately $18 Million per year. The company has five branches located at Cronulla, Hornsby, Katoomba, Parramatta, and The Rocks. The Head Quarter and the Human Resource Department are also located in the same location at the Parramatta’s branch.

The current business is using a simple informative website, five workstations (one at each branch), 60 desktops/laptops and eight network printers that are all connected in separate Local Area Networks (LANs). The data and business transactions are currently stored as static files at the workstations. Unfortunately, there is no interconnection among the workstations at the five branches. The communication between the branches is done via emails or telephones. The data is currently stored at the workstations and the backup is regularly done using CD/DVD.

The brief requirement of this project is to develop an Internet-based software solution that will handle all business aspects of the GSBC, such as online bike booking, onsite booking, resource management, and associated businesses. The consulting group is required to provide a full document of the requirements of the bike club, for their e-bike tour business and new management platform. This new system will be required to use Object Oriented Techniques which will be documented using the Unified Modelling Language (UML version 2.0). The decision of technology should be used for implementation is either .NET or J2EE. Your object oriented analysis report should justify the reason (advantage and disadvantage) of using your selected technology in this project. All the data and business transactions must be stored in databases for better management and retrieval. It is also a requirement to analyse the cost and technical feasibility to connect all the five workstations at the branches together. Finally, automated backup solution is also required in this project. Online Bike Tour Booking - Online bike tour/hire booking can be done via Internet by customers. GSBC hopes that their transformation to e-tour system will help them deal with at least the following markets:

  • Sydney and Suburbs Tours – especially with the increasing international and domestic tourists
  • Family Weekend/Holiday Tours – providing alternates spending leisure hours
  • National Park Tours – for people want to escape busy city life

  • GSBC membership applications/renews – application processing and membership fee payment
  • Bike tour maps – providing maps and guidance for designed bike tours

The web system allows a customer to add new bookings (including bike quantity/type/date/hours), view available bikes and rates, and other functions. The customer must log onto the system before booking a bike tour/hire. If a customer is not registered, the system allows the customer to register online. The required information includes username, password, title, full name, address, credit card information, and others.

Onsite Bike Tour Booking – the system allows GSBC’s staffs to perform all the above functions onsite for customers. The interface and function at onsite booking system might be different from the online version. The onsite booking management system works locally using company PCs and Laptops by authorised staffs and managers. This booking system will be developed from the available system. A staff must log onto the system before he/she can use it. When the staff has logged onto the system, he/she can carry out the tasks for multiple customers.

Onsite Bike Collect and Return – after bike tour booking, customers can collect bike(s) at their specified branch (or another one if bikes are available). Customers can return bikes at any branches and finalise the payment and get the invoice.

Resource Management – GSBC would also like to upgrade its internal business processes to a new level, include:

  • Inventory control – according to current rental of bikes and customer bookings, bikes are transported among different branches.
  • Human Resource (HR) Management – adding/maintaining employees personal records (e.g. information, salary, degree, skills, etc), work schedule of employees, leave and leave balances,

GSBC currently uses an informative website and all the transactions done in the business are stored in static files and back – ups are taken in a CD or a DVD. Also, all the work stations of the 5 branches of GSBC Company are not connected. After thorough analysis of the current system, it is quite clear that the system is not so efficient and effective. Thus, in this report we are proposing an Internet – based software solution exclusively for the GSBC Company in which we will be developing an interactive website at the front – end of the system and a database management system at the back – end of the system.

Front – end website – will be designed in such a manner that it handles all the business operations of GSBC Company. Features or functionalities that will be developed and implemented in the website are user registration on website, user login feature using credentials, view all bikes and their respective prices, book / rent a bike, check status of the booking, cancel bike booking, make online payments etc. These features holds good for online booking. Users’ or customers can also visit any GSBC branch and book their bike on the go. In order to develop a cost – effective system, the same website will be used for offline / onsite bike bookings.
