Solution:Are we failing to Prepare Nursing and Midwifery Students to Deal withDomestic Abuse? Findings from a Qualitative Study

The qualitative study conducted by (Bradbury & Karen Broadhurst, 2015)is a recent research that focused on finding out if nursing and midwifery students are given enough education to combat domestic abuse. The article is a recent article indicating that it is one of the latest documents in that field of research. The authors are also authentic authors that have qualified levels of education. Caroline and Karen are all PhD graduates and serve in their respective careers. Karen is a senior lecturer at the University of Manchester in UK in the school of nursing, midwifery and social work. Similarly, Caroline is a lecturer in University of Birmingham in UK under the school of health and population sciences. Their work is not a series, but supposedly is their first production and article. However, their topic of discussion is a controversial topic that has attracted most scientists in studying domestic violence. It is true that a lot of studies have been done concerning the causes and effects of domestic violence but little known research has been found in the levels of education impacted on nursing and midwifery students concerning domestic violence. That aspect makes the research paper more worthy of study especially because in this case the target audience are the students and not the couples or families engaged in domestic violence.

The authors in their studies tries to explain that the level of education provided to the nursing and midwifery students in combating domestic violence is not enough. The authors reveal through their studies that most of the nursing and midwifery students are so much aware of domestic violence. In addition, the students are aware of the effects of domestic violence, but they lack enough confidence to combat and stop incidences of domestic violence. For that reason, the authors question the future implications of the students to respond and handle cases of domestic violence in their lines of career. For that reason, the two researchers believe that the two groups of students must be given cyclic events of empowerment in order for them to be able to deal and combat cases of domestic violence later in their careers.

Reading through the article it is evident that the authors clearly defined the key terms in the research paper. The key words included empowerment, nurses, students, violence, domestic abuse, and midwives. The authors also stated the design of their study. The research design was a qualitative study. The method of research was also well state. The total number of the participants is also well illustrated. However, the nature and method of selection of the participants is questioned. It must be noted that sample selection in quantitative studies is an issue that has attracted a lot of debate. The researchers samples third year students from different universities. However, the total number of population arrived at is so small indicating that the conclusions may not give a true reflection of the intended study. In addition, the study also targeted third year students only. It would have been wise if the study would have also interviewed and studied students at different levels of education to verify the extent to which the impact of education influences their choices and behaviors. That means the inclusion criteria was biased. However, in their rejoinder the researchers argue that in quantitative research quantity does not matter, but the quality (Sandelowski, 2005). However, it must be noted that 55 is a relatively small number considering that the nursing course and midwifery is found in almost all the universities. In addition, it must be noted that domestic violence is a worldwide factor that is affecting so many families and hence the need to conduct very extensive research. The researcher’s inclusion criteria was otherwise good since it allowed final year students in the two fields. The final year students have extensive knowledge compared to the third year students. On the other hand, the researchers clearly presented their ideas in a consistent and logical manner. Moreover, the article also reveals incidences of sound interpretation of results. The articles conclusion and discussions also provide accurate information revealing that the researchers succeeded in achieving the aims and objectives of their research. The researchers also observed ethical standards while conducting their research hence making their research process credible and valid. In addition, the authors also provide sufficient citations from different authors who have conducted relevant research in the same field of research.

The researchers revealed that most of the students were well aware of the incidences of domestic violence. I agree with the authors in their findings. That is because domestic violence is a well-known topic that is discussed in magazines, social media and something that we combat mostly in our daily lives. I also agree with the researchers that there is no much practical knowledge given to the students especially on how to contain domestic violence. However, it is my opinion that full experience of dealing and combating domestic violence depends on the environment and the experience the nurses and midwives encounter. My sentiments are supported by other researchers. For example, (Missen K. & Beauchamp, 2014)believes that the environment plays a huge role in learning on how to combat issues of domestic violence. Same concepts are reiterate by (Montalvo-Liendo, 2009)in his studies. The same is also supported by (Davila, 2015)in their works on teaching nursing students on how to access and intervene on matters related to domestic violence.

The researchers were successful in their research and achieved their objectives. The aim of the research was to show that the levels of education provided to the nursing and midwifery students is not sufficient in sustaining the students to combat and cope with issues of domestic violence. However, the article has few flaws. One of them is the sample study population which was very small and minimum in comparison to the target audience and the topic of discussion. The research also failed to reveal the extent to which nursing and midwifery students can obtain experience while still at school. However, the authors are qualified authors in the field of study. The article is also relevant and recent making it valid and credible. The research paper also sites many other works that have been done on the same topic.
